Building Youth Leadership on Nature-Based Solutions: BTS Trains Youth Climate Council Ghana

18 April 2023 • Accra, Ghana • Climate Action • BTS Africa

Beyond the Science (BTS) has strengthened youth leadership in ecosystem-based climate action through a targeted training programme for members of the Youth Climate Council Ghana (YCC Ghana), with a focus on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for climate adaptation and resilience.

Grounding Global Concepts in Local Realities

The training brought together youth leaders representing Ghana’s coastal, forest, and savannah zones. Participants explored how global NbS frameworks can be applied within Ghana’s environmental, social, and economic contexts.

Through interactive discussions and case studies, facilitators connected scientific evidence with community realities, enabling participants to design practical, locally relevant interventions.

From Theory to Practice

Sessions focused on ecosystems such as mangroves, wetlands, forests, and urban green spaces, highlighting their potential to address flooding, drought, and land degradation.

Participants examined real-world examples including coastal mangrove restoration, agroforestry systems, and urban greening projects.

“This training helped us understand that nature-based solutions are not abstract ideas, but practical interventions that can protect communities while creating economic opportunities.” — Abigail Akesi, Western Region

Youth as Implementers and Advocates

BTS placed strong emphasis on youth leadership, encouraging participants to see themselves as change agents capable of influencing both policy and practice.

Group activities supported the development of concept notes tailored to regional risks, financing opportunities, and stakeholder engagement strategies.

Connecting Ecosystems and Policy

Participants were introduced to Ghana’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), exploring how NbS aligns with national climate commitments.

The sessions also addressed governance challenges including land tenure, financing gaps, and technical capacity limitations.

Looking Ahead

The training concluded with collective action planning, identifying pilot projects, advocacy pathways, and partnership opportunities.

BTS and YCC Ghana committed to continued technical support to ensure learning translates into measurable impact.
