Amplifying Climate Stories Across Borders: BTS Supports Youth Climate Reporters in West Africa

20 October 2023 • Accra, Ghana • Lagos (Nigeria) • Monrovia (Liberia)

Beyond the Science (BTS) has provided technical and editorial support to youth climate reporters in Ghana, Nigeria, and Liberia, strengthening evidence-based climate journalism across West Africa.

The initiative recognised the growing role of young journalists and content creators in shaping public understanding of climate change. However, many youth reporters face challenges accessing credible data, interpreting scientific research, and translating complex issues into compelling stories.

Through virtual clinics and country-level sessions, BTS supported youth reporters to build skills in climate science interpretation, ethical reporting, and human-centred storytelling.

“This training changed how I approach climate stories grounded in data, but centred on people,” — Adams Abu, Youth Journalist.

Participants produced articles, radio segments, and digital content highlighting local climate impacts and solutions, from coastal erosion in Liberia to urban flooding in Nigeria and agricultural stress in Ghana.

“Youth reporters are shaping how climate change is understood at the community level,” — Diana Asare, Social Media.

By strengthening youth-led climate journalism, BTS is contributing to more informed public discourse and accountability across the region.
